What road salt actually does to a car

Chrome, trim and rims: brake dust is metallic and already mildly corrosive. Add salt and the mix bonds to hot rims like glaze on pottery. That is the browning that will not wash off in spring.
The parts you do not see: rocker panels, door bottoms, wheel wells. Salt sits in seams and drainage holes for months. This is where NJ cars rust first – not on the hood.
Why waiting until spring does not work
By April the damage is done. Salt does not need months of neglect – a few weeks of highway film through a January thaw is enough to start etching an unprotected clear coat. Winter protection is something you do before the first brine truck rolls, not after.

October-November is ideal: paint is corrected and coated before the first salt run, and the coating fully cures in cool, dry weather.
Can you remove salt damage that is already there?
Often yes – oxidation and light etching respond well to paint correction. Deep rust does not. The earlier we see the car, the more we can save.
Is washing in winter really necessary if the car is coated?
Yes, just far less often and far easier. The coating prevents bonding; the wash removes what is sitting on top.
